A kettle: vital for tea! A kettle, sometimes referred to as tea kettle, is used to boil water and provide an easy way to pour it afterwards. They are typically capable of boiling water much faster than any other method, such as heating a pan of water on a stove. As the name may suggest, the hot water is often used to make tea, by pouring the hot water into a kettle with tea leaves and allowing it to brew. However, the water can also be used to make a variety of other hot drinks or to help with cooking.
Types of Kettles There are two types of kettle: stovetop and electric. Stovetop kettles, perhaps one of the oldest kitchen appliances dating back to 900 B.C. in one form or another, use the heat source of a stove or hob in order to boil the water, containing the water in a small chamber so that it heats up quickly. They sometimes include a steam whistle which will let you know when the water has reached boiling point. The electric kettle, invented in 1922 and now the much more popular and common variety, has its own heat source, which will heat up boil the water once plugged in to the mains and switched on. Most modern designs will automatically deactivate once the water has boiled. Both types normally have a set of common features, such as a handle, a lid and a spout.
